What mechanisms can we put in place to support people experiencing poverty, homelessness and housing insecurity?

By Patsy Davies, Network Development Coordinator (Lancashire) at Resolve Poverty

When a family or individual faces a housing crisis, this rarely exists in isolation. Problems around housing and homelessness are often deeply intertwined with poverty, as a symptom of incomes that do not meet growing housing costs, inadequate quality and supply of affordable housing, and a lack of support in sustaining tenancies for those who experience multiple disadvantage of poverty and disability and trauma.

Often, when we think about systemic issues around housing, these issues feel too big and too complex to tackle, but this doesn’t have to be the case. Our annual conference in March will explore housing and poverty in our breakout session, ‘From regional to local strategies; exploring housing support and infrastructure’. During this session, attendees will hear from three speakers from organisations that work across whole regions, to those that work in hyper-local communities, who will share examples and insights from their work to inspire attendees to develop mechanisms which support people experiencing housing crisis.

Colleagues from Greater Manchester Housing First will share information about their Housing First scheme which gives people who have experienced homelessness and chronic health and social care needs a stable home from which to rebuild their lives. They will be joined by Greater Manchester Community Led Homes whose mission is to collaboratively build and manage community led homes with and for communities throughout Greater Manchester, and Manchester Communication Academy who have forged an innovative partnership with Shelter to support the growing number of families attending their school living in temporary accommodation and experiencing destitution. Attendees will be invited to join in a Q&A with the panel at the end of the session.

The Resolve Poverty Annual Conference will be held on Thursday 13 March 2025 at Manchester Hall. Click here to book a place and find out more information about the day, including our speaker line-up, details on all our breakout sessions and FAQs.

We really hope you can join us at this crucial moment in the fight against poverty.
